That must have been a real horror for the driver of a small van: the man was seriously injured and was stuck for about an hour in the completely destroyed driver’s cabin of his van on the A 25 near Marchtrenk (Upper Austria). The emergency doctor handed over medicine in the wreck.
“It looked like a battlefield,” says FF Marchtrenk operations manager Thomas Fraungruber about the photo that greeted his team on the Welser Autobahn on Wednesday around 12:30. Shortly before the Marchtrenk West exit, a small van had collided with a truck, presumably because the latter had overlooked the slowing traffic. The crash was so violent that the driver was trapped in his completely destroyed driver’s cab and the operating materials also leaked.
Difficult recovery
“After arriving, it took us 45 minutes to an hour to free the driver,” said Fire Chief Fraungruber. “We coordinated with the executive and rescue services and at one point created access to the patient by cutting out the driver’s door. Then the emergency physician administered medication.”
Highway closed for two hours
Fraungruber and his comrades eventually managed to use cylinders to push the driver’s cab open enough to free the seriously injured driver from the wreckage and take him to hospital.
After the serious accident, the A25 was closed for two hours towards the Wels junction.
