Over the next five years, major investments will be made in the fighter command location in Wiener Neustadt. The airfield barracks will be operational after all components have been modernized.
Whether on land, from the air or on the water: the soldiers of the fighter command carry out the most dangerous missions of the armed forces. They are the elite unit of the internal national defense.
Plans presented
Now the top troops stationed in Wiener Neustadt must also be given adequate housing. The airfield barracks in the country’s second-largest city are being extensively expanded and renovated. The plans for this were presented by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner and city boss Klaus Schneeberger.
Climate-friendly and self-sufficient
Starting next year, 350 million euros will flow into the barracks area. Where possible, existing buildings will be renovated, although new construction with an area of over 63,000 square meters is also planned. The investments include the renewal of the information technology on site up to and including climate-friendly heating using geothermal energy. In the future, photovoltaic solar energy will ensure the self-sufficiency of the hunting command in terms of energy, and the own source will also guarantee independence. Old concrete surfaces have been unsealed.
Completion 2030
“The modernisation of the airfield barracks is a key project; it is an important step towards future-proofing our national defence infrastructure,” Minister Tanner stressed. The work is expected to be completed in 2030.
