After a flood disaster, the population feels insufficiently informed

Date:

In view of the risk of flooding, Austrians would like to see pragmatic preventive measures, more information and a clear legal framework for protection in the event of an incident. In addition, a further 80 million euros will be made available to those affected by the recent flood disaster. Damage estimates of 600 to 700 million euros are expected.

According to a survey by the KFV, Austrians want pragmatic prevention measures, more information and a clear legal framework for protection in the event of an incident, given the flood risk. In the representative survey, 57 percent of the more than 1,000 respondents said that they felt insufficiently informed about protective and precautionary measures.

What is particularly striking is the great support for a legal framework: 89 percent of respondents were in favor of clearer and uniform rules on remuneration. A natural disaster insurance that benefits all citizens is also seen as a promising measure.

The efforts of the helpers were appreciated
Respondents were enthusiastic about the efforts of emergency services during the recent flooding: the fire brigade, the Red Cross and the armed forces “delivered top performances for the people” in the midst of the disaster.

Another 80 million euros for those affected by the flood
A further 80 million euros will be made available for those affected by the recent flood disaster. The money is intended to implement urgently needed measures in the field of hydraulic engineering and flood and avalanche control, as well as the renovation of damaged dams, the securing of slopes or damage to drinking or sewage pipes.

During the round table conference with the main affected states of Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Vienna, Burgenland and Styria, first conclusions were drawn from the recent floods and it was discussed “how existing flood protection systems can be further improved and adapted to the climate,” said Agriculture Minister Norbert Totschnig (ÖVP).

Since the 2002 flood, the Ministry of Agriculture has invested over €2.2 billion in natural disaster protection, leading to investments of approximately €4.4 billion in flood protection.

“So far, around 2,000 flood protection projects have been carried out in Austria each year. “Ecological flood protection has been a practice in these projects for a quarter of a century,” says Totschnig.

The insurance industry expects huge amounts of damage after the recent storms in Austria.

Major damage is expected, much of it uninsured
According to the insurance association (VVO), damage is expected to amount to a maximum of 600 to 700 million euros. However, this represents only a small part of the damage actually caused, because many people are not insured against flood or storm damage.
