Argentinian scientists have found one of the oldest human remains in South America. Remains of a giant armadillo show signs of human working with stone tools.
According to the analysis, the bones are about 21,000 years old and therefore about 5,000 years older than the previously assumed time of settlement on the continent.
The remains of a giant armadillo followed the trail of the early inhabitants. Bone finds of a glyptodont – they belong to the (extinct) family of non-articulated animals – show traces of working with stone tools. Apparently people used tools to separate the meat from the animal’s bones.
Previously, the continent was believed to have been inhabited about 16,000 years ago.
Recent finds in Mexico and Brazil also provide evidence of an older human presence.
