New version of OP – Surgeon: “13-year-old is just lying on his hand”

Date:

Did a 13-year-old drill out a skull in an operating room in Graz? This question is currently being legally clarified. A surgeon involved has now changed his details for the second time. Now he says the girl only put her hand on his.

The final report of the investigation is available. It is about a sensational incident on January 13 in the neurosurgery department of the LKH University Hospital in Graz. A doctor’s 13-year-old daughter was present when a farmer who had an accident was operated on. Whether she drilled open his skull is a question that now needs to be clarified.

What is interesting, according to lawyer Peter Freiberger, who represents the 33-year-old victim, is the responsibility of the second surgeon present. He initially admitted internally that the youngster had done it himself. The daughter asked her mother, who nodded in agreement.

Statement amended twice
However, during the first interview with the police, the doctor said that this had never happened. Everyone else on the surgical team also took responsibility, including the anesthesiologist who was present at the time. According to information from “Krone”, she would have told about the incident during another operation, and that is how it came to light.

Well, during the second interrogation, the surgeon again changed his version of what happened: according to this, the girl put her hand on his hand. But he carried out the drilling and the girl did not apply any pressure. This further amended acceptance of responsibility is confirmed by Hansjörg Bacher, spokesperson for the Graz Public Prosecutor’s Office. But they don’t want to say more at the moment.

The Public Prosecution Service will decide in the coming weeks whether to file charges or not. Seven people (three doctors and four surgical assistants) are being investigated on suspicion of causing serious bodily harm as a result of an improperly performed operation. The surgeon and her colleague have now been dismissed from the CAGs and the rest of the team has been given a stern warning.

According to the Styrian Hospital Association (KAGes), the operation itself was said to have been free of complications. However, only interns and students are allowed in the operating room.
