Huge explosion – Bombs flew on Beirut after Netanyahu’s UN speech

Date:

Shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised further attacks on the Hezbollah militia at the UN, a massive explosion occurred in southern Beirut. The Israeli Air Force has apparently bombed the Islamists’ headquarters. Videos suggest a huge blow.

Israeli military aircraft carried out attacks on southern Beirut on Friday evening. “Enemy fighter jets have carried out a series of attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut,” Lebanese news agency NNA reported. AFP journalists heard powerful explosions in the Lebanese capital and a short time later the sirens of emergency vehicles.

Thousands of miles away, just before the attack, Netanyahu vowed to ignore calls for a ceasefire: “We will continue to pressure Hezbollah until all our objectives are achieved.”

Videos show a huge blow
The Israeli Air Force confirmed that it had attacked Hezbollah’s command center. It is not yet known how many people died in the action. Videos on social media suggest it was a huge blow.

Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said the Islamists’ headquarters were located beneath a residential building. Thick clouds of smoke could be seen over Beirut and shock waves could be felt in the city. Many victims are expected.

Addressing the Lebanese people, Netanyahu said at the UN in New York: “We are not at war with you. We are at war with Hezbollah, which has hijacked your country and threatens to destroy ours.” As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, “Israel has no choice,” Netanyahu said. He added that Israel “has every right to eliminate this threat and return our citizens safely to their homeland, and that is exactly what we are doing.”

Hezbollah is an Iranian-backed militia and a powerful political force in Lebanon. Meanwhile, Netanyahu threatened Iran with harsh counterattacks: “I have a message to the tyrants in Tehran: if you attack us, we will attack you.” The international policy of appeasement with Iran must end.
