“This is a nightmare” – Netherlands: Hackers steal all police data

Date:

Hackers have stolen the names and official contact details of all police officers in the Netherlands, including employees working undercover. However, the Justice Department said on Friday that no data on police investigations had been hacked.

Minister of Justice and Security, David van Weel, told the House of Representatives in The Hague that email addresses, names and positions of the “entire organization” had been skimmed. This is reported by the ANP news agency.

No research data has been leaked
“There are certain groups that we are now paying special attention to, including people who work undercover,” the minister explains. According to ANP, Van Weel did not want to provide details about this “for security reasons”. However, no data on police investigations or private information of the police officers has been leaked.

According to police chief Janny Knol, a police account has been hacked. The exact number of people affected was not stated. According to the ministry’s annual report, there were approximately 64,000 full-time jobs for police officers and other police personnel in the Netherlands at the end of 2022.

Police union: “This is a nightmare”
“This is a nightmare,” said the leader of the Dutch police union NPB, Nine Kooiman. The most important thing now is “shielding the data and protecting the employees,” she explained.
