A serious explosion took place in the Russian republic of Dagestan in the Caucasus. At least 13 people were killed.
According to the Russian state news agency Tass, at least two children were among the fatalities. At least eleven other people were injured.
No information was initially given about the cause of the blast in Makhachkala, the region’s capital. The investigating authorities also only spoke of an explosion and a subsequent fire, without mentioning the possible cause.
Governor Sergei Melikov drove to the scene of the accident and would not provide details until a later date.
