The assassination of Hezbollah leader Hasan Nasrallah has raised tensions in the Middle East to a maximum. Iran has vowed revenge and called on the entire Muslim world to respond to Israel. Israel, in turn, has reaffirmed its intention to continue attacking Lebanon until all of Hezbollah’s resources are destroyed.
Numerous mass demonstrations have visited several cities to commemorate the leader of the Shia militia for thirty years. Nasrallah was a charismatic leader, and they also made decisions in addition to Lebanon official mourning in Iran, Syria, Iraq and Yemenamong others. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has vowed revenge and called on Arab countries and all Muslims to respond to what he has called Israel’s “Zionist terrorist regime.”
Moreover, Tehran has called for one emergency meeting of the UN Security Councilto try to prevent “war on all levels” in the region. Indeed, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have confirmed the death of one of its leaders, Abbas Nilforushan, in the Beirut bombings.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed that he will continue to attack Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Netanyahu has said they have had many successes, but they have not finished the job yet. On that path he has the American support. The President, Joe Biden, and the Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, have called for a diplomatic solution but insist that Nasrallah’s death was an act of justice.
In the meantime, Israel continues to attack Gaza and Lebanon. In Lebanon alone, 33 people have been killed and more than 100 injured in the past few hours. In one week, more than a thousand people die in Lebanon.
