Lover-wife publicly flogged in Afghanistan

Date:

A woman in Afghanistan has been convicted and publicly flogged for adultery.

After returning to power, the Taliban reintroduced public punishment in Afghanistan in August 2021 – despite criticism from human rights groups and the United Nations. This includes executions and floggings for crimes such as murder, theft or adultery.

Now a woman had to go through this ordeal in public because of an affair. She also tried to run away from home, as the Supreme Court of the ruling Islamist Taliban had announced. The adulteress was tortured with thirty public lashes.

The sentence was carried out on Sunday in the northern Afghan province of Farjab in the presence of Taliban representatives and residents. The woman also received a prison sentence of six months.

Two more people were painfully lashed in southern Afghanistan’s Kandahar province on Sunday, according to the Supreme Court. The background was probably homosexual acts. They would also have received prison sentences of one year each.
