An elderly motorist in Mehnbach, Upper Austria, overlooked a train in front of him crossing the level crossing – and rammed into the side of the wagon without further ado. A total of 42 passengers saw the car being catapulted over a slope into the Au.
The 86-year-old driver was driving on the B141 towards the Atzing level crossing in Mehrnbach around 3.55 pm on Sunday. At the same time, a railcar came from Braunau in the direction of Ried im Innkreis. At the level of the level crossing, the driver and his vehicle collided with the rear of the wagon. As a result of the collision, the vehicle catapulted against the adjacent slope and got stuck on the side there. The driver was trapped in the vehicle.
After an immediate emergency stop, the wagon came to a stop after approximately 200 meters. The 42 train passengers were not injured. The 86-year-old was freed from the vehicle by the fire service and taken to the hospital in Ried im Innkreis with unknown injuries.
Diesel escapes from the train
The impact of the car severely damaged the wagon in the vicinity of the diesel tank, causing a hitherto unknown amount of diesel to leak onto the track bed. An expert was informed about the diesel leak and ordered the removal of approximately one cubic meter of contaminated granite stones, which were removed and disposed of.
