Every year, research divers go into the depths of Lake Keutschach to investigate and protect the prehistoric pile dwellings. During the most recent dive, scientists made a sensational discovery. The ‘crown’ was there.
It was 150 years ago: in 1864, Ferdinand Hochstetter discovered Austria’s first stilt house settlement in the Keutschacher See. Since then, countless researchers and archaeologists have studied this 6,000-year-old human legacy. The Pile Dwellings Board of Trustees has managed the prehistoric finds since it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site thirteen years ago. And every year there are teams on site to work and conduct research in the depths of the Keutschachersee.
