In August, the most important month of the summer season, the number of overnight stays increased by three percent to more than 21 million. With more than 115.6 million overnight stays in 2024, Austria is heading for a new record year in tourism.
In August, the number of guests increased by 9.6 percent to 6.1 million and the number of overnight stays by three percent to 21.1 million compared to August of the previous year. Nearly three quarters of overnight stays were made by guests from abroad, which also corresponds to an increase of three percent.
Overnight stays by guests from Germany (plus 4.1 percent to 8.57 million), the Netherlands (minus 6.5 percent to 1.57 million) and Italy (plus three percent to 0.77 million) totaled 70.1 percent of all overnight stays by foreign guests.
In 2019, the year before the start of the corona pandemic, 115.3 million overnight stays were reported for January to August.
There was a significant increase in the number of overnight stays by guests from China compared to August 2023, with an increase of 86.9 percent to 70,000 overnight stays.
5.38 million overnight stays were reported for guests from Austria, corresponding to an increase of 3.0 percent compared to the previous year.
