A new documentary has revealed new details about the mysterious sinking of the luxury yacht Bayesian. One of the rescue divers who helped recover the bodies after the accident believes many of the victims comforted each other before drowning or suffocating in the floodwaters.
The documentary ‘The Sinking of a Superyacht’, which was broadcast on Thursday on the British television channel ITV, has caused a stir. Many people who helped rescue or rescue the victims speak out – and provide insight into what must have happened during the dramatic last moments of the fatally injured people.
“Saving young people is hard work”
The worst part of the operation was when they found the youngest victim, 18-year-old Hannah, daughter of technology billionaire Mike Lynch. “If you have to rescue a child or young person, it affects you more than an adult,” the rescue diver said. She was the only dead person found alone in a hut. The other five people who drowned or suffocated were found together.
Five dead people were found crammed into a single room
“The victims were found on the lower deck. We found the people in a single room,” explained a rescue diver. Considering the time of the sinking, the helper suspects that they must have been sleeping in their own cabins at the time of the accident.
“The fact that they were found together means – this is just a theory – that they came together to find an escape route together or to comfort each other,” the diver suspects.
Based on new photos of the megayacht, which show it shortly before it sank, a widespread theory about the accident appears to be refuted – krone.at reports. It stated that the Bayesian’s crew had left a door open during the storm that allowed water to enter, which facilitated the rapid sinking of the 56-meter-long ship.
Was the decline responsible for the tragedy?
Another possibility was presented in the explosives documentation. The sailing yacht could have been hit by a downburst, a violent gust of wind that can occur during a thunderstorm. In the event of a crash, wind speeds can reach more than 200 km/h, which can cause enormous damage.
Dr Karsten Haustein, a climate researcher at the University of Leipzig, explained that people caught in a downturn do not have time to react due to the ‘sudden’ nature of the event. This could explain why the ship sank so quickly.
Seven dead, 15 survivors
Seven people were killed in the accident. In addition to billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah Lynch, the manager of the investment bank Morgan Stanley International, Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Anne Elizabeth, the lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nada were also among the dead. Most of the ten-man crew were able to escape from the ship, only the ship’s cook Thomas Recaldo died. 15 people on board the Bayesian survived the tragedy.
