According to Lebanese sources, the main road link between Lebanon and Syria has been blocked after Israeli airstrikes. In recent days, more than 100,000 people have used this escape route to flee the country before the fighting.
The road to the border crossing through which thousands of people recently fled from Lebanon to Syria has been “interrupted” since an Israeli attack on Friday, Lebanese Transport Minister Ali Hamieh said.
The Lebanese state news agency also reported that Israeli warplanes had bombed the road to the Masnaa border crossing in the Bekaa Valley in the east of the country. The road is now closed.
Israel: “Army will not allow arms smuggling”
Israel accuses the Lebanese Hezbollah militia of transporting weapons from Iran along this route. “The Israeli army will not allow the smuggling of weapons and will not hesitate to take action,” Arabic-speaking army spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a message on the short messaging platform X.
Syria borders both Lebanon and Israel and has long been considered a transit country for supplies to Hezbollah, which is backed by Iran. There are also militias active in Syria belonging to the so-called Axis of Resistance led by Iran – as well as Hezbollah.
Weapons depot near a Russian base attacked
These have also likely been targeted by the Israeli air force in recent days. According to Syrian opposition activists, there was an airstrike on an ammunition depot in the coastal town of Jabla on Thursday morning. Jabla is located near Russia’s largest air base, Hmeimim, in Syria, near Latakia.
Russian forces and Syrian air defenses repelled the attacks for about 40 minutes. Serious explosions occurred in the camp. There was even talk on social media that the Russian military base had also been hit.
