A 15-year-old was stabbed fifty times in the French port city of Marseille. The boy was then burned alive. Prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said on Sunday that Wednesday’s crime was clearly due to drug-related violence.
Bessone spoke at a press conference about “unprecedented cruelty”. In this case, the victim was allegedly hired by a 23-year-old inmate in an online network. The inmate, who describes himself as a member of a gang known as the DZ Mafia, had hired the 15-year-old to intimidate a rival by setting fire to his apartment door.
Rival gang sets teenagers on fire
The young person was promised 2,000 euros for this. According to the Public Prosecution Service, the 15-year-old was discovered by members of a rival gang. The gang members stabbed the boy repeatedly before setting him on fire, Bessone said.
Cruel act results in further deaths
According to the Public Prosecution Service, the act of violence again led to a violent death. After the death of the 15-year-old, the same inmate as in the first criminal assignment recruited a 14-year-old youth to take revenge and kill a member of the so-called Black Gang. The prisoner promised a “reward” of 50,000 euros for this.
The 14-year-old then hired a 36-year-old father, who had nothing to do with drug-related crime, as a driver. When he refused to wait for the teen, the boy shot the man in the head. He used a gun he had with him.
Fight for control of the drug trade
Marseille is the second largest and also one of the poorest cities in France. Drug-related violence is common here, and in recent years several gangs have fought for control of the lucrative drug trade. Prosecutor Bessone said the perpetrators and victims of this violence were getting younger.
With these two latest deaths, the number of violent deaths in Marseille due to drug trafficking has risen to 17 since the beginning of the year, compared to 49 such deaths the year before.
