A 19-year-old from Enns suffered from severe shortness of breath and cramps while driving and could no longer control the car. She was very lucky that the car did not fall over a four-meter high embankment. A patrol team rushed to help the unconscious Upper Austrian woman into the car.
Two officers from the Enns police station became life-saving angels for a young driver (19) on Saturday evening. “We were driving in the town of Kristin around 9 p.m. when we saw a car with its engine running on an embankment. In front of it are two fallen marker posts,” says Manuel F. (30), describing the situation at the scene of the accident.
The driver was hanging on the seat belt
His colleague Melanie B. (31) and he immediately stopped and ran to the car, which was locked from the inside. “There was a woman lying in the driver’s seat, wearing a seat belt, her head had fallen over the center console on the passenger side. She did not respond to knocking.”
It was clear to the officers that the young woman was likely to have serious health problems. F. received a shock from his patrol car and broke open the side window behind the driver’s seat.
The driver’s life was apparently in immediate danger and help was urgently needed. “The woman was still conscious, but unresponsive. She suffered from severe shortness of breath and severe cramps,” said F.
First aid provided
The two police officers gave the 19-year-old first aid and alerted the rescue team. “We also cleared her throat so she could breathe better.” Shortly afterwards, an emergency doctor and a Red Cross car arrived and took over the driver’s further care.
The young woman from Ennser was transported to the Steyr Clinic, where she had to be treated in intensive care because her breathing had stopped. Doctors eventually managed to stabilize her sufficiently so that she could be transferred to the normal ward on Sunday.
Others drove by
“During her health problem, she was really lucky that the car did not roll a meter further to the right and fall over a four-metre high embankment. It was also good that we stopped by, because unfortunately others had not stopped.”
