“Peaceful Wiesn” – Oktoberfest: 6.7 million visitors, fewer crimes

Date:

Munich’s Oktoberfest ends on Sunday. According to an initial estimate by the festival management, around 6.7 million guests came to Oktoberfest this year. Despite the large number of visitors, there were fewer crimes and the Oktoberfest medical guard had to treat fewer patients.

The partly wet and cool weather in the second half of the festival could hardly dampen the mood. People strolled leisurely around the grounds, spread out in tents, beer gardens and streets.

Security concept worked
“Oktoberfest was particularly relaxed this year,” summarized festival director Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU). The safety concept worked with the support of the police and fire brigade. He hopes this trend will continue.

More and more guests from India
Numerous guests came from abroad, mainly from the US and Italy, but also from Great Britain, Austria, Poland, France, Switzerland, Spain, the Netherlands and, for the first time, increasingly from India. The majority wore lederhosen and dirndls. Guests increasingly turned to higher quality variants to fully immerse themselves in the ‘Universe of Oktoberfest’, as the festival management explained.

Number of crimes decreased by 25%
“It was a peaceful Oktoberfest. And it was a safe Oktoberfest,” police said. The calls from the security authorities were fruitful and the guests were attentive and took care of each other, said police press spokesman Andreas Franken. The number of crimes fell by about 25 percent.

7 million pints of beer
The innkeepers report an increase of about nine percent in food. The chicken remains a hit, but at the same time there is increasing demand for organic products and vegetarian and vegan delicacies. About seven million pints of beer flowed down the thirsty throat (2023: 7.2 million liters).

The increased security measures, which were extensively discussed in the run-up to the festival after the terrorist attack in Solingen and the shootings in Munich, went smoothly.
