A hike in the Kesselfall gorge near Graz ended with serious injuries. A 43-year-old from the Graz-Umwelt district fell during beautiful weather on Sunday afternoon during outings and slipped dozens of meters. A hiking accident also took place in Upper Styria on Sunday.
The accident in the gorge, which is currently closed due to strong winds, took place around 1 p.m. near the so-called Steintor in the Semriach area. For an unknown reason, the local man tripped over the steep terrain and fell about 40 meters over a rock wall into the gorge. He suffered several broken bones, including both arms, and other serious injuries.
Fallen trees make access difficult
His companion contacted the Euro emergency number 112, which, like the Alpine emergency number 140, makes it possible to raise the alarm even if reception in ditches and ravines is poor. The Graz-Land mountain rescue team was called. It was difficult to reach the victim because of the many fallen trees that had displaced or destroyed bridges. The man was eventually located in the canyon streambed and given first aid.
After stabilization by the mountain rescue team, the emergency doctor then treated the injured person with medication. He was then rescued with a rope from the Christophorus 12 helicopter and flown to the LKH Graz. The 43-year-old’s shocked companion was now led out of the gorge and attended to by mountain rescuers.
Broken lower leg while descending from the hut
The second hiking accident of the day took place in the evening and a 43-year-old from the Graz area was also affected. While descending from the Rottenmanner Hütte in the Rottenmann district of St. Georgen, the hiker suffered a fracture to his lower left leg shortly before 6 p.m. He was taken to the LKH Rottenmann.
