Forum echo – E-scooter: “People drive without paying attention!”

Date:

It’s hard to imagine many cities without them and it’s not uncommon to come across them in the countryside too; Electric scooters have been fighting for a permanent place in our streets for a long time. With their electric motor they reach speeds that cannot be underestimated. That is why they are becoming more and more controversial. Below you can read what our community thinks about this type of transport.

For some, e-scooters are in no way inferior to bicycles in terms of popularity. The biggest difference, however, is that they are equipped with a motor that allows them to reach speeds of up to 25 km/h. According to the ÖAMTC, the same traffic rules apply to them as to cyclists. But accidents often result in injuries. Many readers attribute this mainly to the recklessness of the drivers.

In fact, a large proportion of accidents are due to self-induced behavior involving alcohol and drug abuse.

Driving on the sidewalk is a major source of danger
The cause of the problem is also frequent driving on the sidewalk, which is also mentioned as a problem factor in the comment section. Apparently the arrangement is not so clear to many people and there is uncertainty about the extent to which this is permitted. Maybe some e-scooter users feel the same way…

Driver’s license and registration plate are a must
Experts are in favor of compulsory helmet use and a reduction in the speed limit. Many cities now even ban scooters. That goes too far for some commentators. However, there is relatively unanimous demand for tightening the rules for the use of e-scooters. In this context, people often talk about a special driving license and a registration requirement.

Desire for more personal responsibility
However, there are also voices that speak out against further bans and regulations. They emphasize the personal responsibility of road users and generally view e-scooters as a good thing, which is, however, put in a bad light due to the incorrect behavior of individuals.

What are your experiences with electric scooters on the road? Which of the statements presented do you agree with and which are incomprehensible to you? Would you support a blanket ban on e-scooters in Austrian cities or would that go too far? What other ideas do you have to reduce the risk of accidents with this vehicle? We look forward to your contributions!
