Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will speak about the formation of the government with all party leaders at 1 p.m. The exciting question is whether he will task FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl to form a government. Observers assume he won’t.
The ÖVP and current Chancellor Karl Nehammer have put pressure on the president to appoint Kickl as the election winner so that his voters do not feel cheated. However, Van der Bellen is having a hard time with this, because he dismissed Kickl as Minister of the Interior after the Ibiza video became known – a unique event in the history of the Second Republic.
After his one-on-one meeting with the head of state, Kickl himself confirmed that he wanted to become chancellor.
