Bad news for Kiev: Following the cancellation of US President Joe Biden’s visit to Germany, the Ramstein meeting scheduled for Saturday to support Ukraine has now been postponed.
“Polish President Andrzej Duda will not travel to a summit on Ukraine in Ramstein because it will not take place as planned after US President Joe Biden decided not to attend,” Duda’s adviser Mieszko Pawlak said on Wednesday.
“The meeting will be postponed (…), but at the moment we have no information about when that will be.” Biden also wanted to fly to the American base in Ramstein during his visit to Germany on Saturday to meet many heads of state there – and to meet government leaders. He then canceled his visit to Germany due to the recent severe storms in the US.
Biden now has other concerns
The director of the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP), Stefan Mair, does not see the postponement as a signal of a change in Ukraine policy. “It was clear that Biden had to send the signal that he was taking care of domestic policy – so close to the election,” Mair said.
“I do not see this as a downgrade of Ukraine’s interest. In any case, no new signal was expected from Ramstein, but rather a confirmation that Ukraine would continue to be supported. But this promise stands as such.”
