Some campers at the Burg swimming lake are amazed: they have to pay parking fees for the summer season this year, even though the flood has left a trail of destruction on the campsite. But the community wants to stand firm: “The system was operational in the summer.”
After the municipality of Hannersdorf threatened numerous long-term campers with an eviction notice in the spring and had their ‘illegally’ erected verandas removed by court order, the flood left a trail of destruction on the campsite. The result: instead of 60, there are only a handful of long-term campers in Burg.
Campers see the regulations as a rip-off
There is currently unrest again in the camping paradise. The reason is a letter from the community specifying booth fees for the 2024 summer season, which has already ended. “This is a rip-off. I don’t see why I should have to pay more than 800 euros for something that has become unusable due to a natural disaster,” says Cilli Fürst with her husband Hans in a double suit. He also has to pay 800 euros in fees to the municipality.
The couple met ten years ago while camping. They both kept their parking spaces and also share their stance on the messy case: “The community wanted to drive us out even though they tolerated our porches for years. Now the flood has driven us away and we are certainly not going to pay for that.”
The Fürst couple: “Our life’s work has been destroyed”
The Fürst couple say their life’s work has been destroyed; the damage to both parking spaces amounts to around 60,000 euros. However, the princes want to comply with one request: their seats are vacated, or at least what is left of them. “We have nothing left of our holiday paradise but bulky waste.”
Local boss defends camping fees despite flooding
Mayor Gerhard Klepits has little sympathy for the injured campers. He defends the claim, despite the flooding. “I can’t do what I want with someone else’s property and after they failed to comply with the eviction order, there is now no exception to the law. After all, the system was in operation in the summer,” says Klepits.
Flood protection is finally in order
There is good news when it comes to flood protection at the swimming lake. The municipality and the government are currently starting up a flood protection project, the local boss has announced. This is intended to protect not only the campsite, but also the resort on the other side of the lake.
