Between dilemma and raison d’etre: Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has temporarily postponed the decision on who he will let form the government. At the end of next week he wants to ask the three party leaders to speak. There are currently four likely scenarios conceivable.
Talk instead of negotiate and wait instead of knowing. Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen postponed the award of the government formation contract and asked Herbert Kickl (FPÖ), Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) and Andreas Babler (SPÖ) all to come to the table. Because a stable government needs at least two of the three ‘major’ parties in every possible constellation, the top candidates must, according to Van der Bellen, “reliably make it clear at the end of next week whether and what cooperation is or would be conceivable in principle”.
