The 73 meter long oil and chemical tanker “Annika” is burning in the German Baltic Sea. All seven crew members of the ship have now been rescued.
The tanker has been burning in the Baltic Sea near Warnemünde since Friday morning. Eyewitnesses reported to the “Ostsee Zeitung” that a deflagration or explosion had taken place.
Then clouds of smoke rose. The fire was reported at 9:14 am. The black smoke from the burning ship was visible all the way to the coast.
Tugboat in use
According to the newspaper, the emergency tugboat “Baltic” left immediately to unload and cool the ship. After a short time he had hooked the “Annika”.
640 tons of heavy oil
The Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority (WSA) has now confirmed that the burning ship was a tanker. A spokeswoman for the Cuxhaven Accident Command, which is currently leading the operation, confirmed that the tanker is currently carrying 640 tonnes of heavy oil. This means that the “Annika” is “almost empty”.
Further details and the cause of the fire are not yet known.
