On Friday around 4 p.m., a fire broke out in a horse stable in Wattens (Tyrol), probably as a result of welding work in the stable. When the fire brigade arrived, the farm building was already completely ablaze. The result was a large-scale action by the local fire brigade. No one was injured, but a foal and a cat died in the fire.
The sound of sirens in the city startled the residents of Wattens on Friday afternoon. A fire broke out in a farm on the eastern edge of the city. “When the Wattens fire brigade arrived, the rear part was already completely on fire,” reports operations manager Martin Schrott.
Massive deployment of the fire brigade
Fire brigades from the surrounding towns of Weer, Volders, Kolsass, Hall and also the Swarovski company fire brigade were warned because the flames threatened to spread to the adjacent residential building. “We are trying to prevent this with great effort,” says the fire chief.
Fire fighting attack from inside and outside
The living area is protected with a fire-resistant wall. The fire brigade tried to hold the part of the building by extinguishing the fire from several sides.
The enormous heat development in the attic made the extinguishing work difficult. An attempt was made to fight the fire from above through an opening in the roof.
The couple was able to save three horses
The flames also engulfed a utility pole, which had to be knocked out. As the police announced in the evening, the tenant couple of the farm, a 43-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, both Austrians, had been brought to safety in time. They managed to rescue three horses from the burning stable. However, a foal and a cat died in it. Investigation revealed that the man had carried out welding work in the workshop before the fire broke out. The barn and workshop burned down completely. The house is no longer habitable.
The closure of the B171 was lifted at 6 p.m. State Police fire investigators were called in to determine the cause of the fire and further investigation is underway.
