A fire broke out last night in a hotel in the northern Italian spa town of Abano Terme, which is also popular with Austrians and had more than 270 guests.
About 40 people required medical treatment by rescuers – all of them suffered smoke inhalation and were therefore taken to hospital, Ansa news agency reported. The hotel was completely evacuated. The fire brigade was able to extinguish the fire that night.
Family rescued from the 6th floor
According to the fire brigade’s initial findings, the fire broke out in a technical room on the second floor of the hotel. Within a short time heavy smoke appeared. The smoke spread throughout the building.
A family of three with a small child was initially trapped in their sixth-floor room but was rescued unharmed using a turntable ladder, according to a Twitter video from the fire department.
Popular spa town
Abano Terme is located just over ten kilometers from Padua and is a popular spa town. The city with 20,000 inhabitants has a long tradition as a health resort. Abano Terme is located in the area of the Euganean Hills, known for their thermal water springs. With its hot medicinal springs and mineral mud of volcanic origin, the area is one of the largest spa resorts in Europe and attracts countless holidaymakers.
