The Sahara – one of the driest regions in the world – has received more rain than it has in decades. This creates a special sight: a lake landscape has emerged in Morocco between sand dunes and palm trees.
BThe desert in southeastern Morocco is one of the driest places in the world, with rain rarely falling, especially in late summer. The Moroccan government reported that rainfall exceeded the annual average on two days in September.
The Tata area is among the worst affected areas. In Tagounite, a village about 450 kilometers south of the capital Rabat, more than 100 millimeters of rain was measured in 24 hours, reports the AP news agency.
Lake filled for the first time in 50 years
Lake Iriqui, a famous lakebed between Zagora and Tata that had been dry for fifty years, was filled by unusual rainfall. Tourists exploring the lake landscape in all-terrain vehicles are amazed by the sight. “It has been thirty to fifty years since we have had so much rain in such a short time,” explains Houssine Youabeb of the Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology.
The unusual rainfall could change the region’s weather pattern in the coming months and years. The air can now hold more moisture, which leads to more evaporation and can cause more storms, Youabeb said.
Water tank refilled
The rain is good for agriculture. After six consecutive years of drought, farmers in large parts of Morocco have been forced to leave their fields fallow. Cities and towns had to ration their water. Now the groundwater reservoirs and reservoirs have been replenished.
But the rain masses didn’t just bring benefits; storms cost additional costs in the region. Crop failures were reported in agriculture.
