Next Friday the performances of Circus Roncalli start in the Olympiaworld of Innsbruck. The tent and wagons have already arrived in the Tyrolean capital – by train! The “crown” was there firsthand.
No containers or trucks, but much nicer freight, were loaded onto two trains that were emptied at Innsbruck’s freight station on Monday. The Circus Roncalli found its way to the city on 48 floats. After the caravans of the circus staff were unloaded on Friday after his arrival, it was the turn of the other trailers for shows and offices on Monday.
Some of the wooden, lovingly decorated carts and small vehicles are 100 years old and need loving care. Loading master Steven Jones knows exactly how to deal with this.
For 26 years he has put Circus Roncalli on the train for the journey to the next city. “The loading dock here in Innsbruck is not bad,” he says, “but a bit narrow.”
Rail transport protects old circus wagons
Every car that is unloaded here must therefore be pulled to Olympiaworld by tractor or truck. The wooden wagons can handle a maximum speed of 25 km/hour. For longer distances they must therefore be loaded onto articulated trucks – or wagons. “Rail is the most efficient and cheapest,” Jones explains. Yet there are not many people who travel this way anymore. “I am the last circus loading master in the world,” Jones is certain.
Moving a circus involves a lot of manual work, including setting up the big tent. Masts are erected and anchors are driven into the ground. The logistics team also laid 4.5 kilometers of cable and five kilometers of water hoses and installed around 10,000 LED lamps. Construction should be completed on Thursday with the last minor work. It has to be – because on Friday in Innsbruck it is “clear the ring!”
