A small box of neglected long-eared bats was left outside a residential building in Lower Austria – with a “kind” message from the former owner.
Sadly, small animals that are no longer wanted in this country all too often suffer a similar fate: they are packed into boxes and simply abandoned. The owners of the animals usually remain unknown, so the heartless act has no consequences.
Animals completely neglected
The two rabbits left to fend for themselves in a small metal box in Sieghartskirchen in the Tulln district also fared no better. The uncastrated ram and the presumably pregnant female rabbit were probably barely cared for before. Both have claws and teeth that are way too long, and one of them also has an injured eye.
From the police to the animal shelter
The box was parked in front of a single-family home. There was a “request” attached to it for a nice place. The resident took them to the police, who eventually took the two rabbits to the animal shelter in St. Pölten.
“We almost always have a place immediately available for small animals. We appeal not to simply give up responsibility for an animal and not to leave it to its fate,” says manager Victoria Bischof. The two long-eared animals are now being cared for at the animal shelter before they hope to find them a species-appropriate new home in a few weeks.
