The first delivery of approximately 190,000 doses of the new corona vaccine Comirnaty KP.2 (from BioNTech/Pfizer) arrives in Austria on Tuesday. This is even better adapted to the current virus variants and can be ordered via the eShop of Bundesbeschaffen GmbH.
Deliveries to ordinations and other vaccination centers in the states will begin this week. According to the Ministry of Health, vaccinations will be possible as early as next week. About 250,000 doses of the Comirnaty JN.1 vaccine are still available.
Vaccination advice specifically for a group
The two substances are very similar and are said to significantly reduce the risk of serious illness with the SARS-CoV-2 virus. About 150,000 corona vaccinations have been administered in Austria since the end of July. The National Immunization Council specifically recommends an annual booster vaccination for all people over 60 years of age and those at risk, as well as for medical health professionals.
The wave of infections is slowly leveling off
After a sharp increase in recent weeks, there is currently a slight decrease in the number of infections. Overall, the viral load in wastewater is currently at the same level as November last year. About 700 people are being treated in hospitals, slightly more than at the same time last year. The number of admissions to intensive care units has been in the low double digits in recent weeks.
Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens) called for taking advantage of the free vaccination as soon as possible: “Vaccination protects! Not only does the risk of serious illness decrease significantly, the vaccination also reduces the risk of Long Covid.”
