Suitable for consumption – Rare giant mushrooms cause amazement in Carinthia

Date:

Mushroom experts were surprised: a mushroom species that is very rare in Austria was discovered in Carinthia. And according to mycologists, this is also suitable for consumption.

Rupert Gritzner from Wiednighof in Lieserhofen came across a mushroom species that is very rare in Austria. “There were three mushrooms the size of footballs near the fence in his meadow,” explains amateur mycologist Horst Zwischenberger. Together with Evelin Delev of the “Natural Science Association”, the find was described as a gigantic bovist (Calvatia gigantea) confirmed.

“This is the 116th officially confirmed Giant Bovist in Austria and only the twelfth confirmation in Carinthia. “It is the first discovery for the Spittal district,” Zwischenberger continued.

The largest of the three Boviste had a diameter of 26 centimeters and a circumference of 90 centimeters. The largest was removed and the two smaller ones were “dusted out” and scattered.

Karl Feichter from Da Anderle cut the Bovist into slices and fried it for his guests in clarified butter. “This ‘delight’ enchanted the taste buds of connoisseurs and tasters. As further preparation options, the trendy innkeeper in Lieserbrücke recommends mushroom goulash, breaded like a Viennese schnitzel or with tagliatelle, rice or potatoes,” says Zwischenberger himself enthusiastically.
