Villages “overrun” – Can chaos at the Brenner Pass be prevented at all?

Date:

Traffic jams, sometimes losing up to four (!) hours of time: the current situation on the Brenner route is only a foretaste of what will happen in the coming years. Keyword: bridge renovation. The Tyrolean Transport State Council René Zumtobel (SPÖ) announced in the “Krone” interview that measures would be taken to prevent a collapse on the A13 and the federal highway through the Wipptal.

“Kron”: Based on previous experiences with single lanes on the Lueg Bridge, should it not be recommended to travel across Europe over the Brenner Pass?
Zumtobel State Council: The Brenner Pass is the busiest Alpine crossing in Europe. A total of 14 million vehicles pass through this bottleneck every year. The inevitable and urgently needed renovation of the aging infrastructure south and north of the Brenner will result in capacity restrictions for all European traffic, which will inevitably cause disruptions in the coming years. Yes, the Brenner is a pan-European issue, but unfortunately in our neighboring countries we don’t like to hear that and demand free travel instead! Asfinag is launching a cross-border information campaign in Europe, with a focus on Austria, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. In addition, Asfinag has been coordinating intensively with all stakeholders from the transport sector, tourism, motoring clubs, etc. for some time now.
