Most popular dishes – Carbonara and lasagna are Italy’s export hits

Date:

There is hardly anything that Italians are as proud of as their culinary tradition. Italian cuisine is considered the epitome of tradition and pleasure and is a bestseller worldwide. Carbonara, lasagna and pasta alla bolognese are the Italian dishes most popular among foreigners, according to a survey conducted by the tourist organization Touring Club Italia on the occasion of World Pasta Day next Friday.

Restaurateurs across Italy were surveyed. Spaghetti alle vongole ranks fourth in the ranking of Bella Italia delicacies most popular with foreigners, followed by Pasta all’amatriciana and Spaghetti cacio e pepe. “When choosing a travel destination, culinary experiences are now becoming increasingly important,” emphasizes Margherita Mastromauro, president of the Association of Italian Pasta Manufacturers.

Leading producer of pasta
In 2023, 14 million tons of pasta would be consumed worldwide. Italy is the world’s largest pasta producer with almost 4 million tons and a turnover of more than 8 billion euros. More than half of national pasta production (56 percent) is exported abroad. One in four pasta dishes eaten worldwide is made in an Italian pasta factory.

Italians are also the biggest consumers of pasta. They produce an average of 26 kilos of pasta per person per year.
