After Barbara R. (65) was murdered with a knife last Friday in Zistersdorf in the Gänserndorf district (Lower Austria), new details about the 59-year-old suspect have now emerged. The man – he is from Slovakia – took his own life in a wine cellar after the crime.
According to police spokesman Johann Baumschlager, a semi-automatic long gun with ammunition was also found in the basement tunnel. Chemicals were also found in the 59-year-old’s living space. The results of the autopsy on the suspect’s body are still pending.
The suspect was not registered in Austria
Further information about the 59-year-old’s past life: The man, who has no criminal record in this country, was not registered in Austria and was not known to local authorities until the 65-year-old was murdered on Friday.
First investigations abroad
Following the incident, inquiries were made to European police authorities. It subsequently emerged that the Slovak had been prosecuted abroad for illegal possession of CBRN substances – that is, chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear substances, Chief Inspector Baumschlager said.
When asked, the Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that it had been reported via Europol that preliminary proceedings were underway in the Czech Republic and, as a result, also in Germany. It was about illegal possession of firearms and chemicals. The spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service did not want to provide any further details.
Woman died from her injuries
However, the autopsy of the 65-year-old was already completed on Monday. According to police, the woman died from her injuries due to bleeding. She was allegedly murdered by the Slovakian on Friday.
Murder in the vineyard
The victim was found with stab wounds in a vineyard near Zistersdorf around 4:30 p.m. There was an acquaintance between the woman and the suspect. Moments later, the suspect barricaded himself in a wine cellar and blew himself up. One Cobra officer was seriously injured and another required outpatient treatment. The man’s body was then recovered from the basement with the help of a robot.
