Industry in sight – European Parliament agreement: CO2 emissions must become more expensive

Date:

After the voting debacle two weeks ago, the European Parliament finally reached a position on controversial points of the climate package on Wednesday. The agreement stipulates that the free allocation of certificates for CO2 emissions must be completely phased out between 2027 and 2032. The so-called emissions trading (extra compensation for climate-damaging emissions) is also being extended to buildings and transport.

Two weeks ago, an agreement got surprisingly out of hand. After the project no longer contained sufficient climate protection for many MPs due to various amendments, it was rejected. Last week, Christian Democratic, Liberal and Social Democratic MEPs agreed on the new compromise on key climate protection laws, which is also supported by the Greens.

Pending coordination with EU countries
However, the projects have yet to be coordinated with the EU countries. They want to agree on their position next week, before the two institutions start negotiating with each other. Only when a compromise has been reached can the project go into effect. The proposals for climate protection were presented by the European Commission last summer.

Parliament also spoke out in favor of setting up a social climate fund and some sort of carbon tariff at the EU’s external borders. The fund is intended to relieve the burden on citizens, as increased climate protection is also expected to lead to higher costs for consumers. The purpose of the carbon tariff is to prevent cheaper products produced abroad, which are more harmful to the climate, from becoming a problem for EU companies.
