Terror trial in Vienna – Another 20 years in prison for former ‘hate preachers’.

Date:

The trial of former IS “hate preacher” Mirsad O., who has already been convicted, was concluded on Wednesday evening. The sentence remains at 20 years in prison, an additional sentence has not been imposed. In addition, the Vienna court has sentenced two co-defendants to prison terms of five months and two years respectively.

According to court spokeswoman Christina Salzborn, Mirsad O. has been convicted of attempted incitement to terrorist offenses and terrorist financing. For example, he called on young Muslims to participate in the jihad and collected 20,000 euros at an event in a mosque, which was forwarded directly to the Islamic State (IS). On the other hand, Mirsad O. was acquitted of some of the charges.

“Accept judgment”
With regard to the 20-year prison sentence that had already been imposed, it was stated that it would remain the same – a decision that is not final. An increase to life imprisonment would have been possible. “We have accepted the verdict,” defender Leonhard Kregcjk said. Mirsad O. had already pleaded guilty to the latest allegations and has now been cleared, according to his own statement. His trial began at the end of May.

Two co-defendants have now also been convicted, but only on individual counts. For example, an Afghan who allegedly preached radical Islamic content and financed terrorism was acquitted of the charges of terrorism. He was of the opinion that the loan was intended for the purchase of a car, but could not pay the agreed installments. Therefore, he was sentenced to five months in prison for fraud and breach of trust. A Bosnian alleged to have participated in the “benefit event” for IS has been sentenced to two years in prison for terrorist organization and terrorist financing. Of this, six months are essential. He was also required to be on probation and to participate in a deradicalisation program.

Residency ban against co-defendant
The men accepted the sentences, their sentences are not yet final. Originally, five defendants were part of the main hearing. However, one did not show up at all because he had been banned from Austria. Another participant had already been sentenced to a three-month suspended prison sentence in early June.
