The controlled demolition of an underground ammunition depot belonging to the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon led to an earthquake warning in large parts of northern Israel on Saturday evening.
The Israel Geological Institute confirmed that the powerful explosion had triggered incorrect warning messages from Israel’s Civil Defense, according to a report from the website ynetnews.com. “The warning system identified the explosion as an earthquake,” the institute said.
Israeli media reported that the warning of an acute earthquake had frightened many residents of northern Israel, where repeated rocket alerts about Hezbollah attacks had been sounded for months.
The video in the tweet shows the massive explosions in Lebanon that led to an earthquake warning in northern Israel:
There were similar reports from remaining residents of Lebanese towns near the border with Israel. A resident told the dpa office: “Our beds moved, the lamps wobbled back and forth. The sounds were terrifying.”
