The extension of the inherited house in the market town of Gallizien in the Völkermarkt district of Carinthia had been planned for a long time. Two new housing units were to be built, one for single mother Marianne K. and her three younger children and one for her eldest daughter and her eight-month-old son. Corona, the wave of inflation and the failed construction have seriously slowed down the conversion.
“Not only has everything become more expensive, but unfortunately there were also so many construction errors, for example the chimney was incorrectly placed,” says the woman, who initially assumed provisional delivery in November 2021. But the windows had not even been delivered yet.
Nevertheless, a hefty bill from the municipality for extra water and sewer charges fell into the house. “Normally this only happens when a building is finished and habitable,” says Mrs. K., who therefore left the bill. Until an execution was imminent. According to the mother, an application for payment in installments or postponement of the 2700 euros has been rejected by the municipality.
After the execution, the single mother was fired
But what the mayor denies: “She didn’t get in touch until the seizure was already underway. It is completely normal for an execution to be initiated when a bill has not been paid in such a long time.” Whatever happened, communication doesn’t seem to be the top priority in the 1700s community.
The drama of the story: Mrs. K. worked as a key account manager at a German company. But when the execution hit there, she was promptly fired: “My last day at work is June 30,” says the desperate 47-year-old. “I’m just mad at the way single mothers are treated. You stand there and the ground is being pulled from under your feet.”
