This is how you protect yourself – High season for burglars: Vacation time is time for offenders

Date:

Getting on a plane increases the risk of our house being broken into. Unlike the past Corona years, the number of violations is now skyrocketing.

Take a deep breath, after long anticipation it is on its way to your well deserved holiday. This is currently the case for many Austrians who, after the pandemic years, can finally travel whenever they want. Others steal in the truest sense of the word abandoned houses and apartments with their overflowing mailboxes and closed blinds. Because one thing is now clear: with the disappearance of the restrictions, all inhibitions of the burglars also disappear.

At times, the burglar’s “craft” seemed almost extinct. In 2014 they struck 17,110 times in Austria, by 2019 the number of violations had fallen to 8,835. A trend across Europe that cannot be fully explained, according to Hans-Peter Seidl, head of the break-ins department of the federal investigation.

The crime rate is skyrocketing
It is plausible that the perpetrators would have changed the illegal “trade”. The numbers continued to fall during the pandemic as many burglars simply failed because of the travel restrictions. But now they’re back: While late fall is usually the peak season, the thieves are now likely to take advantage of Mr. and Mrs. Austrian’s travel business. In fact, the Federal Criminal Police Office sees how the numbers skyrocket live.

While there were only 180 crimes in April and May 2021, 400 apartments and houses have already been broken into during the same period this year. The increases apply to both attempted break-ins and completed break-ins – the pre-corona level of 2019 could even be exceeded!

Interesting: In the summer, the days of the week when the hammer is struck change. In the fall and winter usually from Thursday to Sunday, in the summer every day. Times change too. Houses are looted in the afternoon and midnight, in apartments the afternoon and early afternoon wedding is for burglars.

Seidl advises residents of apartment buildings not to open the door to everyone when the doorbell rings downstairs. It can also be burglars who then evict the neighbor’s apartment…
