Crossing the street on a red light is now officially legal for pedestrians in New York. A corresponding City Council law went into effect after Mayor Eric Adams failed to veto it within the allotted time.
That is why pedestrians in the metropolis are now allowed to cross the street wherever and whenever they want, without the risk of a fine.
$300 fine so far
Until now, so-called ‘jaywalking’ was banned in New York. Anyone caught could be fined up to $300 (about 275 euros). In reality, pedestrians almost never observed this. It was also rare for the police to intervene.
“People are just trying to get where they need to go.”
“Every New Yorker walks on the sidewalk. People are just trying to get where they need to go. Laws that punish ordinary behavior and everyday movements should not exist, especially when they unfairly impact communities of color,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
