At least eight people were killed in northern Serbia on Friday when the roof of a train station collapsed in the city of Novi Sad. According to the Interior Ministry, there are still survivors under the rubble, some of whom have already been contacted.
According to media reports, the total number of injured is around 30. According to Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, the clearing work is likely to last several hours. A large contingent of emergency services is on site.
Eyewitness: “Suddenly you heard screaming and wailing”
“Serbian media quoted eyewitnesses to the collapse, which occurred shortly before noon. Countless passengers waited for the arrival of their trains and sat on benches under the canopy. Suddenly there was a crash and “screaming and wailing” were heard, a passerby told the news site “Blic”.
The station building, built in 1964, has been renovated several times in recent years; the most recent, repair and modernization work was completed this summer, which was commissioned by two Chinese state-owned companies, according to TV channel N1.
