A climbing helmet saved a 54-year-old German from serious injury in Tyrol on Friday. The man was on his way to the highest mountain in the Kaiser Mountains with three comrades when suddenly several stones fell from the rock face in the direction of the alpinists.
The 54-year-old rode in a group of four from the Wochenbrunner Alm to the Gruttenhütte and further along the Gamsängersteig (via via ferrata) towards the top of the Ellmauer Halt, the highest mountain in the Kaisergebirge at 2,344 metres. “The four well-equipped mountaineers with alpine experience traveled without a guide,” police said. During the first rope rescue, at an altitude of about 1,890 meters, suddenly and without the intervention of a mountaineer, several stones came loose from the rock face above the alpinists and fell directly in their direction.
Climbing helmet broken
“A rock was crushed when it hit a rock and a fist-sized portion of it hit the 54-year-old in the head,” the director said. The German was wearing a climbing helmet, but it broke under the force.
Flown to hospital
According to the police, the 54-year-old was no longer in good physical condition after the accident and could no longer climb up or down independently. His companions therefore made a distress call. The man was rescued by the emergency helicopter and flown to the district hospital in St. Johann in Tirol.
