The idyllic cog railway ride to the top of Jungfraujoch takes more than two hours. In the afternoon, however, the expectations of about 1,000 tourists were tempered: they were stuck at the ‘Top of Europe’.
About 1,000 travelers waited for several hours on a mountaintop for the Jungfrau Railway to continue its journey. The reason was a falling rock that temporarily blocked the railway line to Jungfraujoch, according to television channel SRF.
According to a spokeswoman, several stones fell in a tunnel on the tracks of the popular trains around 1 p.m., causing a technical malfunction. The rack railway ran to the station at the Eiger Glacier, which was located below the problem area.
Work resumed after three hours
“At the end of the operations, everyone will be safe in the valley,” she promised in Swiss media. After three hours the work could be resumed, so that by evening all tourists could be driven away.
Before operations resumed, experts inspected the route. In the meantime, those waiting for the “Top of Europe” were provided with hot drinks and water. “We hope that you were at least able to enjoy the nice weather,” said the company spokeswoman.
Refund or re-travel as compensation
Tourists who were unable to travel on Thursday due to the incident now have the option to use their ticket on Friday or get a refund. Driving must continue without restrictions.
