Autopsy performed – identity of body in Zillertal confirmed

Date:

The discovery of a body in the Zillertal Alps in Tyrol caused a stir on Wednesday. This was discovered on rough terrain. The identity will likely be determined after the autopsy.

As reported, a severely decomposed body was found in the Tiroler Kesselalm area on Wednesday. The remains were recovered by police helicopter and flown to the valley. No further details about the identity could be released at the time.

An autopsy probably revealed some findings
An autopsy was ordered at the medical examiner’s office in Innsbruck. The mystery surrounding the body will likely be solved on Saturday. According to the police, at the request of the Krone, it is “very likely” that the German alpinist has been missing in the Zillertal Alps since August 15.

The man from Frankfurt am Main had left the Friesenberghaus for a trip to the Hoher Riffler (3231 m). There has been no trace of him since. A search by the Alpine Police, the Ginzling mountain rescue service and the Libelle Tirol police helicopter were also unsuccessful. They also searched in crevices and gullies towards Hintertux.

Not an isolated case
The German was not the only missing person in the Hinterer Zillertal at that time in August. The mountain rescue said at the time that up to eight long-term missing people had been reported in the region.
