On this clear blue autumn afternoon it is peacefully quiet in the community center in Dalaas when I meet Martin Burtscher for a chat. In his Spartan office there is a plaque on the wall with the motto: “You must take everything into account, even the good.” In addition to his work as mayor of Dalaas, he is fire chief. There he found a task that goes far beyond his political activities in the Klostertal and that takes up much of his free time. He is vice-chairman of the “Structure Projects Network”. Behind this somewhat unwieldy name is actually an association whose mission is to transport decommissioned fire engines to Moldova and set up volunteer fire brigades in remote villages.
