After massive illnesses among Russian tourists in a Turkish holiday resort, the Kremlin has now also intervened. The consumer protection authority Rospotrebnadzor is now demanding that the Turkish Ministry of Health release all available information about the “unknown virus”.
In recent days, there have been increasing reports of Russian tourists staying at Hotel Sirene in Belek, Turkey, suddenly falling ill. Russia’s consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor told TASS news agency that the situation was “under control” and that it was in contact with the Turkish Health Ministry.
At the same time, the authority advised Russian citizens staying abroad to stay away from people with symptoms of colds and intestinal infections. In addition, for preventive reasons it is better to drink bottled or boiled water and to pay attention to hygiene in general, the report said.
Türkiye as a popular holiday destination for Russians
The war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Russia have influenced the travel behavior of Russian tourists. Turkey benefited from being seen as a ‘safe’ destination for the Russians. Last year, Turkey had about six million visitors from Vladimir Putin’s empire. Even more guests from Russia were expected this year.
