Following recent firearms attacks in the US, which have become more frequent, the debate over easy access to weapons is rekindling. A US Supreme Court ruling is now delaying opponents: It ruled that carrying guns in public in the United States is a “fundamental right.”
By a vote of six to three judges, the Supreme Court on Thursday overturned a New York state statute that requires proof of special self-defense needs to obtain a gun license.
The court ruled that this ordinance violated two amendments to the U.S. Constitution. The influential gun lobby organization National Rifle Association (NRA) immediately welcomed the decision on Twitter, celebrating a “victory.”
Pronunciation “absolutely shocking”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul, on the other hand, spoke of a “black day.” The court’s ruling was “absolutely shocking,” she said. New York state recently restricted access to firearms after a racially motivated firearms attack at a supermarket in the city of Buffalo.
Memories of School Murder
The verdict is likely to dampen efforts to at least end guns in the United States. At the end of May, a shocking incident took place at a Texas school, in which 19 children were killed by a gunshot.
Not least because the shooter bought the weapons that were used legally, a controversial debate has since raged over whether the purchase and possession of firearms should be more restricted.
