A woman from Upper Styria was screwed up with her dream job. Not because of a lack of skills – but because she hadn’t phrased it gender neutrally.
Gender: For many, it’s a huge reading problem and a transparent distraction from real problems women have. For others the right means to help women move forward. Well, the latter can apparently backfire. As the example of a woman from Upper Styria proves!
The trained disability educator wrote her application letter for a job in a youth center in a smooth and slightly unconventional way. That would be her dream job, she wrote there, she also thinks that with her style and her lifestyle she can certainly inspire and give courage to young people.
But she didn’t even get a chance to bring it up in person, because the answer came shortly after. Unfortunately, the preliminary decision would not have been in their favor.
Not because of a lack of skills, on the contrary, one would be convinced to find an enrichment in her, her skills, CV and education sound “mega exciting”. But the “non-uniform gender-specific language” in the application was noticed.
outrage on social media
That caused a lot of outrage and support for the Styrian, who shared her experience on social media. She can’t believe it herself. “I would have loved to work with young people. But not under such circumstances.”
She notes with amusement that she probably shouldn’t have been addressed as “woman” in the answer either, “that’s probably not gender-correct either.”
According to lead attorney Bruno Sundl, the Styrian Chamber of Labor has never encountered anything like it. However, no legal claim or compensation could be derived from this.
In the case of the initiative in question, it is admitted that it was “very, very unfortunate to say”. But it is precisely in their field of work that young people need to be helped to write good formal applications. And the woman’s was very good in content, but not formally.
Apparently gender produces bizarre flowers…
