Recently, three kittens were found in very poor condition at the town hall of Auerbach in Upper Austria and taken to the Pfotenhilfe animal shelter. Since the kittens are only a few weeks old, they could not have gotten there on their own and were probably left behind.
“Only during the intake investigation did we discover the full extent of the disaster,” says Pfotenhilfe boss Johanna Stadler. “The three have severe eye and ear infections, severe runny noses, parasitic infestations and diarrhea so severe that the fur on their bottoms is stuck together with feces and their anus is severely inflamed.”
Criminal cruelty to animals
Pfotenhilfe is now carefully nursing the trio back to health, but is also asking for information from the public about where the three kittens could have come from. The perpetrator or perpetrators have violated laws several times, namely the obligation to neuter the mother cat in the Animal Welfare Act and the Criminal Code, where abandonment of animals is considered animal cruelty and punishable by up to two years in prison. But the fact that these babies were so neglected and untreated by a veterinarian over a long period of time that they became so sick is also considered criminal animal cruelty.
“Ice cold and heartless”
“Animals feel pain in a similar way to us. Therefore, it should be clear to everyone with heart and common sense that you need to take care of them so that they can live as pain-free and healthy as possible,” says Stadler. “The diarrhea often comes from cow’s milk, which cats cannot tolerate. Anyone who then leaves them to their fate without treatment and leaves them seriously ill must receive a deterrent punishment, otherwise nothing will change. Apart from criminal liability, I simply cannot understand how people manage to behave so coldly and callously towards animals.”
